China not to allow foreign control over container terminal operations
HONG KONG (AFX-ASIA) - China's Minister of Communications Huang Zhendong said the mainland will not allow foreign investors to take a controlling stake in China's container terminal operations. Cited by the Hong Kong Economic Times, Huang said China is aware that foreign companies have monopolised some Chinese container terminal operations. However, the report said Huang did not espond to questions on whether Hutchison Whampoa has violated monopoly rules. The report said a foreign consortium led by Hutchison Whampoa has taken a 73 pct stake in the first and second phases of Yantian port. The report also quoted market sources as saying Hutchison Whampoa is hoping to take a commanding stake in the third phase of Yantian port.
