CAAC declines comment on report of large losses at China's 3 main airlines

SHANGHAI (AFX-ASIA) - An official at the Civil Aviation Administration of China's price department declined to comment on a report saying China's three largest airlines made large losses during the two months to February. A report in the Nanfang Weekend last week cited an industry source as saying the three airlines made large losses during the two months, with one incurring a loss of up to 500 mln yuan. The CAAC official said the commission has collated figures for airlines' earnings during the two months, but is under no obligation to reveal these figures. The Nanfang Weekend report said large losses in the airline industry early this year caused airlines to disregard the Civil Aviation Administration of China's ban on air ticket discounts, cutting prices in order to attract more customers. Analysts said the country's three largest airlines are Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines.
