STOCKWATCH: Shangri-La -- 2 (firm to benefit from balanced investment)

HONG KONG (AFX-ASIA) At 3:24 pm, Shangri-La Asia was unchanged at 7.80 hkd on volume of 290,000 shares, while the Hang Seng Index was down 550.05 points at 12,604.39 on turnover of 6.72 bln hkd. An analyst with a regional brokerage said Shangri-La Asia is expected to benefit from its balanced investment throughout the region. "There is robust economic growth in China, and Shangri-La Asia also has investments in the ASEAN countries. The company has tried its hardest to diversify its income sources," the analyst said. However, Giovanni Kuang, an analyst with Tung Tai Securities, said his house does not recommend buying hotel stocks. "A global economic downturn has threatened profitability of the hotel industry. A US economic slowdown is affecting the rest of the world," Kuang said. "Now, things have changed. Uncertainty has clouded the outlook," Kuang added.
