Motorola to cut 4,000 jobs in 3 networks units

SCHAUMBURG, Il (AFX) - Motorola Inc said it will cut 4,000 jobs in three networks units, in a further cost-cutting initiative after previously announcing plans to eliminate 22,000 positions from its worldwide workforce of 147,000.The company said that, in connection with the latest workforce reductions, it will take a charge of unspecified size in the first half.Motorola said the jobs cuts would take place in its commercial, government and industrial solutions sector, the global telecommunications sector, and the broadband telecommunications sector.Plans for the 4,000 new jobs reductions will either be completed or communicated to employees by the end of the second quarter, with the timings of some jobs cuts to be dictated by regulatory considerations in some countries. Edward Breen, president of the company's Networks Sector, said: "Motorola is making tough but deliberate and strategic business decisions in order to remain competitive in the slowing economy." "Unfortunately, reductions have been necessary for us to improve financial performance, and this is something that we will have to continually evaluate as we monitor market and economic conditions," Breen said.
