China state banks unhealthy loans 25 pct of total loans: PBoC's Dai
SHANGHAI (AFX-ASIA) - Unhealthy loans at China's four state commercial banks amount to 25 pct of the banks' total loans, People's Bank of China governor Dai Xianglong said, according to Shenzhen's Securities Times. The report cited Dai as saying that the ratio of unhealthy loans on the banks' books four years ago was 25 pct, and after the removal of 100 bln yuan in unhealthy loans from their books last year, this ratio remains at 25 pct. Without the removal of these unhealthy loans, the banks' unhealthy loans would currently amount to 35 pct of their total loans, Dai reportedly said. When questioned about the figure 100 bln yuan used in the report, a senior editor at the Securities Times said the reported number appeared incorrect, adding that the amount of unhealthy loans removed from the banks' books last year should be more than 1 trln yuan.
