Disney to cut 4,000 jobs amid weakening economy

WASHINGTON (AFX) - The Walt Disney Co is to cut 4,000 jobs from its global workforce to meet "the pressing challenges" of a weakening economy, Disney chairman Michael Eisner said in a letter to employees. "We need to face up to the increasingly pressing challenges of the softening economic environment," Eisener told employees, whom he addressed as "fellow cast members." He said the company hopes most of the cuts, which will affect all operations, could come through a "voluntary separation prgram" offering special severance incentives and extended benefits. "However, if our goal is not met through the voluntary plan, mandatory workforce reductions with lower severance benefits will be required," he warned.
