No evidence U.S. spy plane crew "interrogated" by China: Pentagon

WASHINGTON (AFX-ASIA) - Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral Craig Quigley said the U.S. had no evidence that the 24-member U.S. crew detained on Hainan Island after a collision between their surveillance aircraft and a Chinese fighter had been "interrogated." "We have no indication that they've been mistreated in any way, nor interrogated ... but I would think that it should come as no surprise to people that they've been interviewed," he said. Quigley said the collision had been unintentional and should be treated as an accident. He also said the incident would have no immediate impact on the U.S. program of military exchange with China. "The basic value of the program is still worth pursuing, because of the human interchange that you have between ever-more senior military members, as they meet each other for the first time," he said. When asked if the crew had had time to destroy sensitive data or equipment on board before it was boarded, Quigley replied: "You would expect a well-trained crew to carry out their training and the emergency-destruct procedures as best as they could, given the limited timeframe available to them."
