Mitsubishi Rayon to build MMA monomer plants in U.S., China by 2004: report
TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - Mitsubishi Rayon Co Ltd will build plants in the U.S. and China by 2004 to boost output of a key material for making acrylic resin by 70 pct to about 500,000 metric tons a year, the Nihon Keizai newspaper cited sources as saying. The 30 bln yen project is aimed at turning Mitsubishi Rayon into one of the world's top producers of Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) monomer, it said. Methacrylate monomer is the foundation for a wide range of acrylic product applications such as autos, home appliance components, paint and signboards. Mitsubishi Rayon will spend 20 bln yen on production facilities in Texas to produce 120,000 tons a year, while in China the company will construct a 10 bln yen plant to produce 70,000 tons of MMA monomer a year, the newspaper said. The plant will likely be located around Shanghai.
