U.S., China 'heavily engaged' to resolve dispute - White House

WASHINGTON (AFX) - The Bush administration has increased its efforts to resolve tensions between the U.S. and China following Sunday's emergency landing of an E-P3 Aries spyplane in China after a collision with a Chinese fighter. "I would say that the governments are heavily engaged," in trying to resolve the dispute, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer told reporters. Meanwhile, China's ambassador to the U.S. paid his third visit in as many days to the State Dered steam. Ambassador Yang Jiechi left the building in downtown Washington without speaking to reporters after his latest meeting with top U.S. officials. During a meeting last night at the State Department, Powell gave Yang a letter to Chinese Vice Premier Qian Qichen, which expressed regret for the loss of the Chinese pilot and a desire to end the diplomatic crisis. Fleischer also said Bush had spoken twice with Secretary of State Colin Powell late yesterday and with his national security advisor, Condoleezza Rice.
