NEC shuts down assembly ops at California facility due to weak demand
SANTA CLARA, CA (AFX) - NEC Corp and U.S. semiconductor unit NEC Electronics Inc said it has shut down the latter's semiconductor assembly and test operations in Roseville, CA due to weak semiconductor demand. The move resulted the loss of 100 jobs, the company said, noting that additional cuts in other areas will result in the reduction of 600 more. NEC's Roseville plant is being restructured in order to be more cost-effective and to better focus on U.S.-based customer requirements. Manufacturing at the state-of-the-art facility will shift focus away from DRAM memory to higher-value system LSI and logic devices to meet demand from the growing communications market, it said.
