China opposed to former Taiwan president Lee's proposed visit to U.S.
WASHINGTON (AFX) - China said it opposes former Taiwan president Lee Teng-hui's proposed visit to the U.S. next month. "China is firmly opposed to his travelling to the United States," embassy spokesman Zhang Yuanyuan said. "We believe he would take advantage of the trip to the United States and for that matter other countries to propagate Taiwan independence and sowing discord between the people in the country he visits and China." Lee will visit Cornell University in New York in May for the inauguration of a science research center in his honor, a university spokesman told local Taiwan television. He is also currently fighting for a visa to visit Japan for medical treatment.
