Intel to cut prices after new 1.7 gigahertz chip launch

LONDON (AFX) - Intel Corp said it plans to announce price cuts on its chips after the launch of its 1.7-gigahertz Pentium 4 microprocessor, which will be priced at 352 usd for bulk buyers, the New York Times reported. The chip is the fastest chip yet for desktop personal computers, the NYT said in its online edition. It said Intel is expected to the chip today. The report cited Intel as saying it will discount the slightly slower 1.5 gigahertz version, which it introduced in November for 637 usd, to 256 usd. The 1.3-gigahertz chip, released in November at 332 usd, will cost 193 usd, Intel said. Intel and Advanced Micro Devices Inc hold a virtual duopoly in the desktop PC microprocessor market, the report said. For its part, AMD has said it intends to match or beat Intel's pricing at each speed level at which the companies compete, according to the report.
