China formally protests U.S. arms sales to Taiwan

WASHINGTON (AFX-ASIA) - China's ambassador to Washington has lodged a formal diplomatic protest at President George W. Bush's plans to sell arms to Taiwan, State Department spokesman Philip Reeker said. Ambassador Yang Jiechi delivered the protest in a meeting with Marc Grossman, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, he said. "It was a formal protest based on what they had read in the press" of the decision, Reeker told reporters. He declined to elaborate on the meeting, but said that Grossman had made clear to Yang that the U.S. does not consult with China on weapons sales to Taiwan.
