Taiwan CEPD sees unemployment rising to 4.5 pct by Aug
TAIPEI (AFX-ASIA) - The Council for Economic Planning and Development said unemployment is expected to rise further, moving closer to 4.5 pct by August given the current protracted economic slowdown. CEPD chairman Chen Po-chih was quoted by the United Evening News as telling parliament that unemployment is already hovering above 4 pct after being seasonally readjusted. While unemployment is unlikely to exceed 4 pct for full-year 2001, "the people still have some difficult days ahead," he said. Earlier, the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics said it expects 2001 unemployment to come in at over 3.9 pct.
