Compaq sees better Asia Pacific revenues in Q2 vs Q1

SINGAPORE (AFX-ASIA) - Compaq Computer said it expects Asia Pacific revenues in the second quarter to be better than the previous quarter's level, although it remains uncertain whether year-on-year growth seen in the first quarter can be sustained given the poor visibility in the industry. Compaq Computer said first quarter revenues in the Asia Pacific grew 16.0 pct year-on-year to 591.10 mln usd. In local currency terms, revenues grew 29.0 pct as a result of weaker regional currencies. Compaq Computer Asia Pacific vice president & managing director Paul Chan said revenues in the second quarter will be better than the first, supported by strong demand for handheld devices. But as to whether the PC industry will see a bottoming out of the cyclical downturn in the second quarter, Chan said "visibility is still difficult". Handheld devices account for 10.0 pct of Compaq's product shipments in the region. Chan said he also sees significant growth coming from markets like India and southeast Asia over the next 12 months. In the first quarter, revenues in U.S. terms were up 49.0 pct year-on-year, while revenues in ASEAN were up 25.0 pct year-on-year in U.S. dollar terms. To protect group margins, Chan said Compaq is trying to make sure that its suppliers can deliver its products at the most competitive cost.
