U.S. undecided on stance toward China's Olympic bid: Powell
WASHINGTON (AFX) - The United States has not yet decided whether to oppose China's bid for the 2008 Olympic Games, which has come under heavy fire from human rights campaigners, said Secretary of State Colin Powell. Asked whether the U.S. government would adopt a position on China's bid to host the Olympics, Powell told the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, State and Judiciary that "we have not decided whether we will or will not". China's bid has been the subject of a campaign of opposition by members of the U.S. Congress concerned over human rights issues. The House of Representatives' International Relations Committee has already voted to pass a non-binding resolution opposing China's Olympic bid to a full vote before the entire House. China has condemned the resolution. Beijing faces competition to host the games from Osaka, Toronto, Istanbul and Paris. The International Olympic Committee will put the contest to a vote in Moscow in July.
