PCCW, Telstra jv evaluating business opportunites in Asia

HONG KONG (AFX-ASIA) - Pacific Century CyberWorks Ltd and Telstra Corp Ltd's IP backbone joint-venture, Reach, is constantly evaluating business opportunities in Asia, including Japan, a company spokesman said. Commenting on market rumours that Reach is talking to a Japanese company to venture into the Japanese market, the spokesman said: "All I can say is that we have an ongoing process of evaluating business opportunites in Asia, and Japan is no different. Our strategy in Japan is under continuous review," he said. Should a decision on any business deals be made, an announcement will be made, especially if it has an impact on Reach's customers, he added. He declined to give further details, adding that Reach is a private company. Reach is rumoured to be looking for a Japanese partner to develop its business in the Japanese market, a move that could lead to possible changes in the company's shareholding structure. Currently, Telstra and PCCW each hold a 50 pct stake in Reach. PCCW closed flat at 2.825 hkd. In Australia, Telstra closed up 0.02 aud at 6.64.
