China cautions Japan over Koizumi's visit to war shrine

HONG KONG (AFX-ASIA) - Japan should act "discreetly" in the wake of reports that Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi plans to visit the Yasukuni Shrine to the nation's war dead, Xinhua quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi as saying. In a despatch received here, Sun was quoted as saying China hopes that Japan will take the right attitude towards its wartime history to prevent damage to bilateral relations. He said Japan should honor its commitments on the issues and act discreetly, describing the shrine as a symbol of Japanese aggression. Visiting the shrine reflects the attitude of the Japanese government and leaders towards Japan's history of aggression, he said.
