China's opposition to NMD will not change: foreign ministry spokesman

HONG KONG (AFX-ASIA) -- China's opposition to the U.S. national missile defense (NMD) program is consistent and will not change, Xinhua quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Sun Yuxi as saying. In a despatch received here, Sun said that the U.S. plan to develop the system is a matter that "harms others without benefiting the United States itself." If it continues with the program, it will "lift a stone only to drop it on its own toes," Sun said. He warned that the deployment of NMD will disrupt global stability, undermine mutual trust and cooperation between nations, hinder the process of international disarmament and trigger a new arms race. China hopes to urge the U.S. to give up its NMD program through diplomatic consultations, he said. "We hope the United States acts with great care and continues to adhere to the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) treaty and other treaties on disarmament and arms control", he said.
