Motorola wins 407 mln usd contracts from China Unicom

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill (AFX) - Motorola Inc's Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS) has won a 407 mln usd contract from China United Telecommunications Corp (China Unicom) to provide 800 MHz code division multiple access network infrastructure in 11 provinces, including Beijing. The total Motorola-supplied network's capacity will be about 4 mln subscribers. Installation of Motorola's systems, including SC4812T base stations is scheduled to begin in July, and commercial CDMA digital services are expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 2001. This is the first CDMA contract between the two companies but Motorola has been the largest mobile wireless system supplier to China Unicom since 1995. "The CDMA infrastructure, that we will be installing, lays the groundwork for China Unicom's plan to migrate to cdma2000 1x networks in 2002," said Simon Leung, Motorola corporate vice president and general manager of GTSS's Asia-Pacific Region. China Unicom is planning a nationwide network system capable of supporting a subscriber capacity of 15 mln users this year and expanding it by 2005 to have a nationwide capacity that supports 60 mln subscribers.
