Toyota to supply diesel engines to BMW: report

TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - Toyota Motor Corp and Bayerische Motoren Werke AG have agreed on a deal in which the Japanese carmaker will supply its diesel engine unit to the German firm, the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun reported, without specifying sources. The supply of the compact diesel unit, with displacement of 1,400 cc, together with a common rail injection system, will begin from autumn this year, at a rate of over 1,000 units a month, it said. Toyota will initially ship all diesel engines from its Japanese plant, but will consider supplying the power train units directly from its French plant to BMW, after the French plant begins diesel engine assembly in 2003, it said.
