PCCW offers no guarantee of job security on Guangzhou relocation: staff union

HONG KONG (AFX-ASIA) - Pacific Century CyberWorks Ltd did not offer a guarantee of no job losses as the company considers switching directory inquiry operations to Guangzhou, the South China Morning Post cited chairman of the Hong Kong Communication Employees' Association Cheng Chun-man as saying. Cheng said PCCW chairman Richard Li failed to allay staff concerns, although the report cited Li as saying the company had no plans for redundancies after he met with 1,000 staff representatives. "He (Li) said he could not offer any guarantee at this stage but promised American-style mass layoffs were not likely," Cheng said. "What we fear is that the relocation and lack of a further guarantee is just the start of a series of cost-cutting moves and forced redundancies," Cheng added. Li said layoffs would be the last resort if cost control measures, such as pay cuts for senior staff and improving management and technical efficiency, failed.
