Philip Morris ruled to compensate HK$23.4 bln to a cancer patient

US Los Angeles Court ruled that tobacco maker Philip Morris should compensate US$3 bln (around HK$23.4 bln) to a cancer patient, with the reason that the company did not warn the patient of the harm of smoking. The stock slipped to US$48.25 in the after-hours dealing session after the ruling and lost US$1.75, or 3.5% to close at US$50. Philip Morris said that it would appeal to a higher court and pointed out the plaintiff Richard Boeken neglected health warnings and smoked two packages during the past 40 years. The lawyer for the company said, despite the common sense that the unpopular Philip Morris is regarded as a company making products harmful to human health, the evidence still can not support the plaintiff to win the lawsuit.
