Merger between BPL and AT&T would threaten Hutchison Whampoa

The expected merger between BPL and AT&T would threaten the dominant position of Hutchison Whampoa Ltd (0013) as the biggest mobile operator in India, overseas news reported.

The number of subscribers would hit 1 mln after the two financial institutions merged their mobile business in India and the market shares would be lifted to 28%. Hutchison Whampoa is the largest mobile operator in India with 800,000 clients and 20% market slices.
