US stocks dropped on uncertain economic outlook

US stocks drifted lower again Wednesday as the economic fallout from last week's terrorist attacks, but a late burst of buying pushed the Dow Jones industrial average back. The Dow closed down 144.27 points, or 1.62 percents, at 8759.13 points, and the S&P ended 500 16.64 points, or 1.61percent, at 1016.10 points. The Nasdaq composite dropped 27.28 points, or 1.75 percent, to 1527.80 points. All three indices hit the lowest intraday levels since October 1998.
