Dow Average fell on poor retail sales figures and Anthrax fears
U.S markets tumbled after reports a case of anthrax was diagnosed in New York City and the Commerce Department said retail sales fell 2.4% in September, reflecting reduced activity in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed more than 200 points on the news before a late rally reversed steep losses in the final hour. The Dow ended down 66.27 points, or 0.7%, at 9344, while the Nasdaq gained 1.93 points, or 0.1%, to 1703. The S&P 500 fell 5.8 points, or 0.5%, to 1092. For the week, the Dow gained about 2%, while the Nasdaq rose about 6%. The S&P 500 advanced 1.9%.
