China Unicom launches trial CDMA network for Shanghai APEC meetings

China Unicom (0762) has launched a trial CDMA network in Shanghai for use by delegates, officials and journalists at this week's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings. The network, which consists of five base stations in Pudong and five in Puxi, is off-limits to commercial users. It offers mobile data transmission speeds of up to 150 kilobytes per second. The wireless internet connection speed on a normal mobile communications network in Shanghai is less than 20 kbps, while the speed on GPRS services is only 50 kbps.
